If you could buy one delay pedal with the requirement that it has to be fairly straightforward to use (no crazy Strymon computers) and needs to cost $200 or less... is there any reason not to go with a Carbon Copy? I've never used one in person and it's hard to hear the differences between digital and analog in YouTube vids...

The CC implements pretty much every best practice in analog delays, accumulated over the last 40 years. Hard to go wrong with it. They make 'em in mini-pedal form now. So, to answer your question: no, there is no sound reason NOT to go with it. And if you live in the right sort of municipality, you may be able to snag one second hand for a good price.

Go to a store and try the carbon copy and the boss dd-3. Buy the one you prefer.

Or a DM-2W. Those three would be my choices as well.

Carbon Copy. Although if it's just slapback you're after, the JHS Milkman is just for that, and has the bonus of an adjustable boost button. Handy if you have no other means to boost. I think you'd have to find used in order to get under $200.

I’ve gone through my share of delays and currently use a Strymon Volante and the delays in the Fractal FX8 and Kemper Profiler.

My faves include Diamond Memory Lane jr. for its simplicity and great delays and the TC Electronic Flaskback for it’s flexibility and wide range of available delays including the TonePrint technology.

Both of these units are good bangs for the buck especially the Flashback.

You might check out the Keeley Caverns. a carbon copy ish delay with bonus reverb. You can get them used for under $200. I just got one to free up space on my board.

I've seen Wampler Faux Tapes and TC NovaDelay's for $150-ish. Other good delays, too, in that range.

But nothing wrong with the CC and DD's - I've seen them even cheaper, used.

I've owned both the carbon copy and DM-2w. I currently own the DM-2w and prefer it far more than the CC

I have had a boss dd-3 for so long that I won't need any other pedal.

I use it for one pink Floyd setting and it's great.

I have rack delays that I can insert into if need be.
