A few years ago, Bob Weil, of what used to be Visual Sound (now True tone) posted a number of pedal shootouts, in which there was a "studio audience" and Zac Childs (who works for Bob but does a column in Vintage Guitar) played the same riff through a bunch of pedals they couldn't see, and the audience was asked to say which they preferred. While pretty much every pedal could duplicate virtually every other, there was something missing. And the "something" was that each pedal was set so that it mimicked some benchmark. You had no idea how much more or how much less it could get. So, yes, one could set the Tone control so that A sounded like B, but could you get a brighter sound on A than on B, or a lower drive setting on B than on A? What was missing was a sense of the range of control on each pedal, and that's often where they differ. For instance, there is much that is absolutely identical between the TS-9 and the SD-1, but the SD-1 can eke out more gain and grind than the TS-9, and also provide more volume. If one merely sets the controls so they sound the same, you won't know that. (The guy in the audience with the white hair is my longtime friend RG Keen, who designs for Truetone.)

I love the KTR as well, but more as boost than OD. I've been using a Cornish SS-3 as my main OD for about 3-4 months, and I think it is my favourite ever. I think its even better than the BJFE Honeybee, and I loved that thing for years.

I also use it for low gain OD and as a boost to a Zendrive.

The Van Weelden Royal Overdrive. When a/b'ng with other Overdrive pedals, it really stood out for me especially with a bit of volume.

Mine's at the end of my dirt chain, set on red setting; everything stacks so well into it.

I use the green to boost into a dirty amp. Something I do less often, but when I do, green is best.

Yellow is a nice fuzzy dirt that I use occasionally when I want that sound. When I want it, I really want it, so am glad to have it!

I usually keep the treble turned up to 3:00.

And yes, such a pretty pedal! Awesome that you have one too!

Sorry I've been a stranger the last while. It's a combination of personal life stuff taking a lot of my time and that I haven't been doing as much buying and selling of stuff. Ya know how we all ebb and flow sometimes.

I did buy a new tele back in May and I'm loving it! However, stupid photobucket doesn't let me use them to host pics on forums anymore.

Maybe I'll start using the Guitars Canada pic uploader. Start a belated NGD thread.

Lately its been a Boss Blues Driver. I have way too many OD's, and a couple of nice ones (Zvex BOR, OCD, TS9, etc) and its just been working with my rig lately. I was even stacking a pair of them for awhile. Wish I hadn't waited till a year ago to give them a real chance.

I bit on the hype and bought Keeley's' the D and M pedal, and I really love it.

Source Audio LA Lady - its crazy what is under the hood on that thing. I am not picky whether something is digital or not. I also like the idea that I can tweak the settings on the fly with presets and the soleman. Super versatile.

Mine's the Schaffer Replica, not really an overdrive but a clean boost that kicks the crap out of the front of your amp! I can't really explain what it does but I've never heard another overdrive or Boost do it!
