Today I lost my best friend, the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live. Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.
Awww man. A great bass player is like having the best parents in the world. They're the person who gives you that secure bass to stretch and "be you". Dunn was never flashy. He was just always...there.
I'm gonna have to go in the basement and dig up my copy of Don Nix' book "Road Stories and Recipes" ( Road Stories and Recipes: Amazon.ca: Don Nix: Books ). Apart from having an interesting career himself ( Don Nix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) Nix was a member of The Mar-Keys, who cut one of Stax Records first huge hits - "Last NIght", a band that also featured CRopper and Dunn. The book is chock full of funny stories about the road, including one in which the guys, in their 20's and on tour in Sweden or Denmark, get told about a sex show not to miss, and get handed a card with the address. The guys think it's going to be strippers or something similar, but it turns out to be some not particularly attractive husband-wife S&M team in a small private home, and the guys are just plain creeped out.
Anyways, quite apart from the music - which I don't really have to listen to since I have entire cerebral lobes dedicated to its "correct" performance - there's a bunch of stories in there about Duck and the rest of the guys, many of them high school buddies (which is how some of the very best bands are born).
I commented on the other thread that was started--this sucks.
