IT was stolen in Montreal on November 10th 2012 and just showed up on Kijiji today and now lives in Quebec City with a new front plate and a retolexed black box from it's old red tolex. I am filing the police report tomorrow and the guy hasn't responded to any of emails today when I alerted him he was selling my stolen amp. Will the Quebec police pursue this or has too much time gone by
  2. Answer the ad as a potential buyer (using a different e-mail address).
When you show up to test/check it out, confront him then. At least
you'll know where he lives. Inform the police asking for an undercover
to accompany you. If they don't, then bring a big biker buddy with ya.

First of all, I would assume that the guy selling it in all likelihood isn't the thief. He's probably just a guy that bought it after it changed hands a time or two. Imagine his perspective...omg kijiji crazies ranting about stolen amps. I probably wouldn't respond to any email like that, no matter how eloquently worded. That's not a comment on you personally.

If absolutely getting it back is your only goal...respond from a different e-mail and just buy it. I would try and get a bill of sale from him with specifics, model, serial, his name, address, etc. Then perhaps following up after the fact to get your money back might be an option.

Going through channels with the police may or may not get you what you want. It all depends on how fast they decide to get around to dealing with a relatively low priority issue. I would assume that you would HAVE to have done a police report at the time of the theft. You would probably have to provide some form of evidence regarding your ownership that had specific identifiers (serial etc.).

In the grand scheme of things, unless it's worth a ton of money, if the police don't get it and give it back to you, then pursuing civil action probably isn't worth the time, trouble, expense.

Not sure how much of this is joking around but...

Unlikely that an undercover will come with you...and taking a biker with you might get it back, but it might also end with you facing a charge too. Just throwing it out there.
  4. You're right, the last part was kinda tongue in cheek.

New tolex, faceplate , how do you know it's yours? Lot of work to cover it up if it is. Just a question , no accusations .

Good luck Jonathan. I hope you get your amp back.

The first incarnation of Bionic is still one of my favourite bands of all time. :)

Did you file a police report when it was stolen? With serial number? If yes, just head to the police station with a copy or link to the ad, that shows the same serial number. They will take it from there.

Take copies of the ad RIGHT NOW and store on your computer, if you have not done already.

I think alerting the seller is a BAD MOVE.

i agree. i think if you have your proof of ownership, surprise is your ally.
All it takes is for the guy to later tell the cops, "sorry its not true...and i already sold the amp to another guy who didn't give me any contact info".
cops will drop it like a hot potato.

I'd say also make sure you reply as an interested buyer so that you have his contact info before he takes the ad down!
