the bassist from Canned Heat passed this week
Saw him many times with different artists. Great player and showman.
He played with John Mayall for a bit, didn't he?
Funny, I hadn't thought of Canned Heat in ages, and while my wife and I were watching a Woodstock documentary we had PVR'd, Bob Hite flashed on the screen and I remembered that they had played the festival.
Drummer "Fito" de la Parra is the only member of the original band still living.
He played and recorded with John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, The Monkees, Tom Waits, Albert King, Leo Kottke, John Lee Hooker, Ry Cooder, Charlie Musselwhite, JJ Cale, Tracy Chapman, and many more. I saw him with Canned Heat, John Lee Hooker, and John Mayall that I can remember. He was a monster bass player and no slouch on guitar either. I'm not a big fan of extended solos but at one Canned Heat concert he played a ten minute solo while the rest of the band took a break. I almost switched from guitar to bass after watching that.
And I believe he was with Canned Heat at Woodstock.
RIP. Best band performance at Woodstock .
