Of Joe Hall and the Continental Drift.

I saw him live 3 times. The first was in the early 90s with Willie P. Bennett and one of the Quarringtons. It was a great show! Saw him again about 10 years later in a solo show at the Eaglewood Festival and he seemed like he would rather be anywhere else. Last year I saw him on his farewell tour and he seemed to have re-gained some perspective.

Amazing songwriter and possibly the most expressive face in the music business. "Fresh Outta Rehab" might be the best "recovery" album of all time.

Sad. I met Joe, and interviewed him for the U of A radio guide, when he played the old Sidetrack Cafe in Edmonton in the early '80s. Sweet guy with a great sense of humour. Great live performer. And great band too. I think we also saw him at Festival of Friends in Hamilton. I have the album with "Vampire Beavers" and "Nos Hablos Telephonos" (On the Avenue).

Joe was one of those guys, much like Mendelsohn Joe or Bob Schneider or Doug Bennett, that folks in the industry just didn't know what to do with. Not a deliberate goofball like Weird Al, but not entirely serious, either. Just delightfully Joe.

    RIP

years back I heard Vampire Beavers on the Dr. Demento Show.... was a sunday night heading back up north and the seek button stopped there..... Shortly after that saw him at the Northern Lights Festival in Sudbury....he introduced a song about pinball machines called "Quarters to Chicago" ....looked for a copy of that song for years.....

Funny that you should both mention "Vampire Beavers". The first time I saw him a friend requested "Vampire Beavers" - he just laughed and said "That part of my brain is long gone!"
