Don't know if this is the best place to mark an anniversary but here goes:
15 Years Ago: Dimebag Darrell Killed Onstage

I'm not a huge Dimebag/metal fan, but a very sad event nevertheless...

Nice tribute by Cross Canadian Ragweed:

Very sad day ----- remember it well.

Glad I saw him numerous times (including that famous/infamous VDOP show at the Commodore), just an incredible live player and performer. Greatly missed.

RIP Dime! You were the real thing.

Of all the music I've been into, especially in this genre in particular, I've never given Dime Bag or Pantera a proper listen or chance for some reason. No real reason why neither, other than when they first came out I was into the NWOBM and older Hard Rock.

I think it's time to change that finally, so offer me up the 1 Pantera album I have to listen to.

I'd start with 'Vulgar Display of Power'.

You gotta get into (or past) Phil's voice - it is an acquired taste, IMO. But once around that, the band is superb. The Abbots grew up in a studio (their father was an engineer in Texas) and the production and tightness show. They were the top of the heap of metal bands for the whole decade of the 90s, no easy feat in a genre that moves that quickly and has so much incoming material.

If you get into that, I would then go either side of it - 'Cowboys From Hell' or 'Far Beyond Driven'. The live album, 'Official Live: 101 Proof' might be worth a try as well. They were an amazing live act.
