He was 81, which, Keith Richards aside, is a pretty good stretch for a rock guitarist. I hadn't realized his familial heritage was Lebanese, which probably accounts for "Misirlou". I seem to recall reading in Guitar Player or somewhere that, in addition to the obvious Strat, a Dual Showman was important to his sound. In fact, this site - The Father of Surf: 7 Essential Dick Dale Facts - states that the Dual Showman was essentially his idea, that Leo Fender turned into a product.
Man oh man did he use heavy strings! .16-.60! No bending on that puppy!
Geee ! "The already legendary Dick Dale died..." RIP Mr Dale.
